The Czech Republic’s Velká pardubická steeplechase, which has been run since 1874, ended for the first time ever in a dead heat on Sunday.
This year’s point-to-point race was the 134th time the event has been held and after a dramatic photo-finish the judges decided there was nothing separating the two local challengers—Sexy Lord and Godfrey.
The win was the first in the Velká pardubická for Sexy Lord’s jockey, Jaroslav Myška, and the second for the eight-year-old gelding’s trainer, Martina Růžičková, who had previously won the event in 2016 with Charme Look.
Godfrey, another eight-year-old gelding, closed in on Sexy Lord in the final stages to give trainer Dalibor Török his first win in the race and the seventh for jockey Jan Faltejsek.
Pundits had expected the first win since 1995 by a foreign-trained horse, but both highly-tipped Irish hopefuls— Coko Beach and Streets Of Doyen—unseated their riders.
